Melanie Chevarie Midwife Educator

Welcome,

I have been a primary care provider for most of my adult life. I use an integrative approach to my clinical practice that includes functional and evidence-based medicine and trauma-informed care.

I cared for thousands of families and worked with cis-women and people AFAB within all seasons of their sexual and reproductive health.

Midwife-Led

  • My approach to primary care offers comprehensive services such as gynecological care, blood work and lab tests. I focus on addressing the root causes underlying imbalances or dysfunctions that lead to illness to promote wellness.

My background in integrative and functional medicine combines conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies, such as herbal medicine, nutrition, mindfulness, and mind-body practices, to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. I specialize in prevention and lifestyle interventions and empower you to play an active role in your health and well-being.

  • Midwifery-led functional medicine care for menstruation and fertility integrates the principles of functional medicine with the compassionate, trauma-informed and person-center approach of midwifery to address the underlying factors affecting menstrual health and fertility.

We use different evidence-based approaches to address dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, fibroids, candida, and bacterial vaginosis. This may involve bloodwork and lab Tests, In-Uterine Insemination, nutritional interventions, herbal therapies, lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques, and targeted supplementation to support hormone balance, optimize reproductive function, and enhance your overall health and well-being on your path to menstrual health and fertility optimization.

  • Since the beginning of time, we have been birthing Humanity. Pregnancy, birth and postpartum are all natural and physiological part of life. And, when appropriately held, they become the rite of passage they are met to be.

  • I focus on addressing the root causes rather than just treating symptoms of menopause. As a functional medicine practitioner, I consider factors such as hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, stress levels, gut health, and environmental toxins. Treatment plans may involve:

    Personalized dietary and lifestyle recommendations.

    Targeted supplements.

    Stress management techniques.

    Hormone-balancing therapies.

Other integrative approaches to optimize overall health and well-being during menopause.

This approach aims to support you through the transition, promoting long-term health and vitality.

  • Being a clinician in reproductive health, I have received the stories of trauma from thousands of people, which has motivated me to work towards developing a Trauma-Informed Care curriculum to be implemented in obstetrical programs. These efforts towards prevention are essential, as is accessible therapy for those who have already been injured. In response to that need, I graduated in 2023 with an Advanced Degree in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy at Naropa University and also had the distinguished opportunity to become MAPS’ Educated Therapist.

A holistic approach to addressing sexual and birthing psychological trauma may involve integrating various modalities of therapy and healing practices to address the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and relational aspects of trauma.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, when used appropriately and in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches, has shown promise in facilitating healing and transformative experiences for individuals who wish for support in navigating their trauma.

An integrative approach might be structured:

    Traditional Psychotherapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Body-Based Therapies: Techniques such as somatic experiencing, yoga, mindfulness, and breathwork.

    Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Holistic lifestyle: Nutritional support, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management techniques.

    Healthy Social Support Networks

    Integration and Aftercare:

    Peer Support Groups

    Self-Care Practices

It’s important to emphasize that psychedelic-assisted therapy should only be conducted by trained therapists in legal and ethical settings.

Additionally, this approach should be tailored to each individual’s unique needs, preferences, and circumstances, with careful consideration of medical history and contraindications.

“In a person-centered model of care, as Mama Loup provides, the person maintains power and authority over their body and their choices.”

About me

  • I hold my practice in a trauma-informed and person-centred model of care. Through out my care, you’ll maintains authority over your body and decision making. As such, I provide informed-choice and an integrative approach of care which include functional medicine, somatic and mindfulness practices, and herbal medicine as well as conventional medicide to give you the opportunity to receive care and modality that most resonate with you.

  • I am a Certified Professional Midwife. I have attended births at homes, birthing centres and at hospitals in Canada, Kenya and the USA as primary care provider. I have also practiced in the most remote areas of Northern Canada with the Inuit communities, of Cameroon, Uganda, South Africa and in Kenya where I lived for six years. During my 19 years of teaching experience including 9 years of obstetrics, I have instructed nurses, doctors, midwives, traditional birth assistants and students of those fields.

As a primary care midwife, my scoop have included continuity of care with autonomy in diagnosis, prescription and administering of pharmaceuticals including opioids when needed. My practice holds full medical responsibility of patients in preconception, prenatal, labor & delivery and postpartum including medical responsibility for the newborn until the age of 12 weeks. I have had full hospital privileges in high-risk facilities, I have cared as a first assistant in c/s, order induction and I was trained to repair 4th degree tears. My experience also includes women’s wellness, family planning, IUD insertion, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in obstetric emergency skills, including neonatal resuscitation (from PPV, to intubation and from cardiac massage to umbilical vein catheter for drug administration).

Beyond my formal University program of 4 1/2 years in Primary Care Midwifery attended in Canada, I have a specialized graduate diploma in Clinical Global Health (tropical medicine) from the Université du Québec and earned two undergraduate certificates, one in Communication from the University of Ottawa the other in Psychology from the University of Montreal. I received a specialization from a year long program on child sexual abuse and I completed a Summer program from the University of Geneva in Global Health and Human Rights. Finally I have attended a graduate-level programs from Sherbrooke University in Restorative Justice and I have completed a program for Health Care Practitioner with Aviva Romm in Functional and Integrative Medicine and I have also followed her Herbal Medicine for Women program. I am a Master Candidate at Johns Hopkins University in Education for Health Professional.

I was Faculty in the Medical Department of the University of British Colombia. In 2012, I authored a chapter addressing mothers’ health in a book approved by the Society of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of Canada about physical activities during pregnancy and the postpartum period. I was a lead clinical consultant education director for the maternal and newborn health program in Kenya. I was Faculty with The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of the UK with whom I taught Obstetric Emergencies and Fistula Prevention in Uganda and I am part of a team of health practitioners who provide education and clitoral reconstructive surgery for women who underwent Female Genital Mutilation.

I co-founded AKNA , a Knowledge Broker Firm in maternal and newborn health, with whom I consulter for Kenyatta University in creating a direct entry midwifery program, help practice and institution to update their guidelines to the latest evidences and with a women centered care approached as its corp philosophy and worked on producing materials for an NGO to establish their whole perinatal program. And as co-founder of École Quantik Doula, I have trained over a thousand doulas around the world as our full-spectrum doula school quickly became the largest doula school for the French-speaking community.

Concurrently, I am a 2nd year Masters Candidate in Evidence-Based Teaching for Health Professionals at Johns Hopkins University. Being a clinician in reproductive health, I have received the stories of trauma from thousands of people, which has motivated me to work towards developing a Trauma-Informed Care curriculum to be implemented in obstetrical programs for my Capstone project. These efforts towards prevention are essential, as is accessible therapy for those who have already been injured. In response to that need, I graduated in 2023 with an Advanced Degree in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy at Naropa University and also had the distinguished opportunity to become MAPS / Lykos Educated Therapist.

Having worked in remote areas and in traditional settings where access to emergency care was often not available, I got the opportunity to develop a balance practice between herbal medicine, traditional wisdom, strong manual skills, and allopathic medicine. I also had to develop an acute sense of preventive medicine where I believe the art of midwifery lies. My philosophy as a clinician and an educator is based on the premise that an evidence-based, women centred care not only preserves the dignity of women, but also the one of the practitioner.
